Cone Lamp

Cone Lamp

Emotional Design Research — Shibaura Institute of Technology, Tokyo

Cone Lamp was developed during a research stay at Shibaura Institute of Technology in Tokyo. As part of my research into Emotional Design, I designed three multifunctional lamps and conducted surveys to examine how closely each lamp was perceived in line with its intended expression and character.

Playfulness, minimalism and a clear sense of character are qualities I value strongly in design. These became key goals for Cone Lamp, together with a high-end expression.

Inspiration

The concept was inspired by everyday life in Japan, with specific references to the traditional wooden toy kendama and the countless traffic cones carefully placed throughout Tokyo.

Form and function

Once the concept was established, the formal composition developed quickly and systematically.

Light and balance

The largest cone has a different colour and material.

The weight balance between the handle and the cone surrounding the light source allows the lamp to be adjusted freely.
